Mayor's Office
Karl Dean is the sixth mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County. He was elected on Sept. 11, 2007 in a runoff election, following a general election where he also received the most votes.
Dean's priorities as mayor are improving schools, making neighborhoods safer and bringing more and better jobs to Nashville.
In his first 100 days as mayor, Dean established Project for Student Success, a forty-member task force charged with developing steps to reduce high school dropout rates. He also began a series of Town Hall Meetings on Education focused on the needs of individual school clusters across Davidson County.
Dean is also working to see more police officers protecting our streets. He has welcomed two recruit classes to the Police Training Academy since taking office, putting the Police Department on track to be fully staffed by the end of 2008.
Acknowledging that small business provides the bulk of local employment, Dean hosted a Small Business Summit in mid-December 2007 to help homegrown businesses stay and grow here in Nashville.
Dean first held public office when he was elected as Nashville's Public Defender in 1990, a post he was re-elected to in 1994 and 1998. Dean served as Metro Law Director from 1999 to January 2007, when he resigned to run for the office of mayor.
Dean completed the program for Senior Executives in Tennessee and Local Government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard in 1999. He has served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Vanderbilt.
Dean is married to Nashville native Anne Davis, who he met in law school. Anne practiced civil and criminal litigation with Bass, Berry & Sims and Neal & Harwell. She has taught at Vanderbilt Law School for nearly two decades, including courses on white collar crime, trial advocacy and legal writing. They have three children: Rascoe, age 20; Frances, age 14; and Wallen, age 12.
